Projects and Awards
Celebrating our heritage, protecting diverse canal wildlife, and honouring the dedicated volunteers who maintain and enrich the historic waterway corridor of Stoke Bruerne.
Heritage interpretation and trails
With generous support from the Heritage Lottery Fund, our partnership has brought the village and its canal vibrant history to life. We have designed and installed comprehensive interpretation signage, developed scenic waymarked trails, and published dedicated heritage leaflets detailing the canal village and iconic historic landmarks like the Blisworth Tunnel, locks and the Tramroad over Blisworth Hill.
Alongside detailed conservation plans, these initiatives enable visitors and locals alike to explore and appreciate the authentic character of the Grand Union Canal and its environs.
Environmental stewardship and biodiversity
The canal network forms an invaluable 2,000-mile green corridor linking countryside, parks, and woodland. Working alongside the Canal & River Trust, our volunteer stewardship ensures this vital habitat thrives, safeguarding water voles, bats, kingfishers, otters, and countless pollinators. Through regular canal corridor maintenance, careful waterway management, and ecological care, we ensure our natural heritage flourishes side-by-side with local history.
National recognition and heritage honours
Our projects and volunteers have received wide recognition across the heritage and waterways community. The Stoke Bruerne Interpretation Project was named a finalist in the prestigious Living Waterways Awards. We proudly earned a Renaissance Heritage Award for Best Event, and our community champions have been honoured with Marsh Charitable Trust Volunteer Recognition awards. Furthermore, the Partnership secured a Transport Trust Red Wheel heritage plaque for Blisworth Tunnel, mounted upon the historic blacksmith's forge near the tunnel entrance, and in 2008 we were a finalist in the Royal Town Planning Institute Awards for our Conservation Plan.
